how do amazon rate their books? do they rate books higher if they make more money from them?

i would assume popularity is included in the ratings ( of the author ) but they are rated before they are sold so sales wouldn't be included

No after you buy a book or if you own one you can go up to amazon and rate the product.

I know when someone buys one of my books the rank goes higher. Like many authors, I check my Amazon and B&N ranks almost daily.
