You wash them with your hands in a washing bowl or in the bath. Dirty clothes used to be taken to the stream/river and washed there, they still do this in some parts of the world.

they put them in a tub, and washed them by hand. they also used a scrubbing board.
They then had to hang the clothes to dry
if you go far back enough I am sure people washed them in rivers or other bodies of water and used stones like wash boards.

In Roman times, clothes were washed in urine, either human or animal. Slaves trod in this urine, mixed up with the clothes to get them clean. It was a process called fullering, so if your surname is Fuller you know where it comes from. Fullers used to go round taverns collecting urine from all the drinkers. Strange but true.

When I was younger, my mum used to put the clothes into the old glazed sink. Pour in the soap flakes(made from carbolic soap) and boiling water and then me and my brother had to jump up and down(a bit like a dance as the water was so hot) to pound the clothes to get the dirt out. Happy days.

They had washboards and mangles. Washboards are rippled metal that the clothes were rubbed against and mangle squeezed water out, I Believe.
