I tried out a load of amps the other day and found a 40watt fender which i loved...however it's damn expensive. I was looking on the Laney site and found some with much higher wattage and effects much cheaper.

Are these Laney amps cheap and gimmicky? Or is the fender overpriced? Help!

Fender is overpriced, yes.I used to have a Twin Reverb, which I liked and now I have a Marshall JCM900 w/a Marshall 1960 cabinet.I like the Marshall sound better. For just kicking around,I have a Vox Valvetronix 30 watt combo.I liked the built in effects that the Vox has as opposed to those on Crate and Line6 amps.If you are looking for a good quality amp that sounds good and won't break your wallet,go with a Vox.If you have money to spend, buy a Marshall, they are a little expensive, but worth every penny. And I couldn't say if the Laney you looked at was cheap and gimmicky, but Tony Iommi uses Laney amps.

I had a windfall and decided to treat myself to a new amp. Went to a couple of shops and tried lots of different makes and models side by side (including Laney and Marshall). What I was looking for was power, clarity, and interesting tone. Eventually picked a Fender DeVille - 60w, stereo, tube for around £650.

Advice: try as many as you can, take a friend for a second opinion. If you can beg, borrow, or steal the money then go for the one you really love or just wait till you can afford it because you'll forever regret buying second best.

BTW as people have rightly said here, 40 - 60 watts tube is very loud and you'll never put the amp past volume level 2. But that's purely a cap on bedroom guitarists (no disrespect). In the gigging world, that extra power makes for tonal guitar bliss - promise.

If you haven't used the Laney amp then why risk it? If its for home use, you certainly won't need more than 40 watts anyway, in fact i doubt you'll push the volume up past about 2. I have a fender champion (30 watt), which was £160 about 2 years ago. It must be pretty good coz i've still got it. If you like it then pay a bit that bit extra, it will last for years so its worth it

If you're serious about playing don't cheap out. Im not saying buy the most expensive thing, but make sure the quality is there. Yea, you're partly paying for the fender name. Keep in mind your playing style. And also your instrument. If you have an acoustic-electric get an amp that is made for one, If you play metal, buy an ibanez, mesa, marshall, randall, or peavey, ect.. Good luck, and also make sure you try what ever it is you are buying first.

Alright it really depends on what type of guitar you have. I have an acoustic-electric, I have a CRATE amp, it is awesome! If you have an electric, go with the Fender, I used to have a Fender amp, I loved it it is totally worth it!
