If you are a pitcher you rather be facing someone with a .333 avg then someone who has the capability of hitting 50+ HR or is extremely good under pressure. Pitchers would rather give up a single or a double then a HR.
David Ortiz (nicknamed Mr. Clutch) - He is at the top of the list with many others, but something that is very much different with him is that when the team needs runs he will give the team the support he needs. He has had i think 5 walk off this season.
Albert Pujols - He has the capability of being the best. If you ask any pitcher in the National League im sure they would say that Pujols is the last person they would want to be facing or a close 2nd.
Ryan Howard - He had a great season last year with 58 HRs. He is defidently a pitchers worst nightmare in the National League. Keep in mind that he is very young and he will be a big threat for a long time.

How 'bout I go by the best by position.
C: Ivan Rodriguez: He can field and hit, one of the best to play the position...maybe better than Bench
1B: Albert Pujols: He is an above average fielder, he can hit for average, and power, drives in runs, the perfect hitter. Howard can just hit, also Mark Teixera, he can field and hit also.
2B: Chase Utley, put up a 200 hit, 30 homer season, while hitting in 35 straight games.
3B: Alex Rodriguez: Not the greatest fielder 3B wise, but he can flat out hit, he hit .290, with 30+ homers, and 100+ RBI's people called it a bad season, that shows how good he is.
SS: Michael Young: He fielded better than Jeter in '06 (really look at the stats, he just isn't highlight reel), plus he has gotten 200 hits for 4 straight seasons.
LF: Manny Ramirez/Alfonso Soriano: Soriano just came off a 40-40-40 season, while Manny was typical Manny hitting 30 homers...again.
CF: Jim Edmonds, he fields and hits, 2006 was an off year but give it some time and he'll be Edmolnds again.
RF: Vlad Guerrero/Ichiro: Ichiro is one of the best fielding RF's, he can also hit for average, and he steals. Vlad hits average and homers, plus he's got a cannon for an arm.
SP: Johan Santana: He gets K's, W's, and SO's.
RP: Mariano Rivera: He's the greatest closer of all time, he can pitch in the postseason, and he puts up great numbers. I've seen him pitch and it is something.

Although its sounds a little team biased, but no one has had a better career than Alex Rodriguez so far. Remember he's only 31 years old. His lifetime stats are staggering. .305 BA 1347 RBI's 464 HR's .386 OBP .573 SLG and in his off year in 2006 he still clubbed 35 HR's and 121 RBI's. All this and he changed his fielding position 3 years ago to be a part of the Yankees.

If it were judged solely on hitting I would say albert pujols, but all around it would be between a lot of players, some one who plays a tough position and can steal, etc. I guess it would be a-rod inspite of last season, if you look at his total stats he is pretty dang good, and he plays 3rd/short stop.

The real question is, is there any player in the league that you would trade the 'best' player for. If you are the team that has Pujols, you would not trade him for anyone. Any other player in the league, you would trade for Pujols straight up in a heart beat. If you could trade A-rod for Pujols right now, you take that it, Big Fat Poppy, you do it, Jeter, you do it, Soriano, no question. Pujols is the only player in the league that you would not trade for anyone else.

If you look at the stats its Pujols,he has started his career like no other in the History of Baseball. It's going to be interesting to see just how his career plays out.If he stays healthy Barry Bonds cant hit enough Home-Runs,the record will be his one day.
