Tell me if you know anything about this.
I overheard two police officers talking about how they can use their laser speed gun to get a reading off of the front wheel of a motorcycle that makes it appear that the motorcycle is going much faster that it really is.
It makes sense to me since the rotation of the upper part of the front wheel is moving toward the laser gun much faster than the motorcycle actually is.
The same would apply to the rear wheel inversely if it was viewed from behind.
Unfortunately I live in a City and surrounding area where speeding fine scams are big revenue generators and a frequent occurrence.
And since it is always assumed that if you are riding a motorcycle, you are always speeding there is very little defense against this.
Please don't lecture me about how the police are just doing their job and how difficult their life is and silly diversionary arguments like that.
I don't dispute that.
I am simply asking if anyone else has heard of that practice

I know a few cops around here (DFW,TX) and most aggressive radars are mc patrol. Their attitude is usually forgiving toward other cyclists provided you wear a helmet and or are not weaving in and out.

I have not heard of this-and think I would have.
Unfortunately, on a traffic citation you are guilty until proven guilty. Get an attorney, use driver safety courses and deffered adjudication whenever you can. The odds of proving yourself innocent in court( when your civil rights are not in question) are up there with winning the lotto. While the scenario you use is not plausible to me, no radar readings are required in most municipalities(usually this is an internal dept requirement.-but an officer can guess at your speed and often have it hold up in court-it happened to me.) If you are the same gender and race as the officer, you have no special interests to back you.

I guess we look at these legal issues as small stake(speeding that is) and often figure that we probably sped before without being caught.
I still get fumed about paying the "local random tax". When I rode a street bike, I was never pulled over. Conversely, every red car I have owned, I was pulled over( blue is the best).

If you believe this is happening in your area-perhaps you can get local media to investigate...but I doubt it....police sales of Kawis and HDs, and some BMWs are above our importance as consumers. I am a member og the AMA only since I must be to race.

The laser is shot out and bounces back to the gun taking the measurement. The rotation of the tire is not an issue. IMO

If they want to give you a ticket they could just give you a ticket without the laser reading. Why go through the trouble of getting a false reading.

They could also get a reading off a fast moving vehicle and not reset the gun. Then continue to pull people over with the original setting from the first vehicle.

Again no need to get a false reading off a tire.

The top of the tire won't reflect enough light to get any kind of reading on a laser gun. The reflection from the rest of the bike will totally overwhelm anything off the tire. And the idea that they're going to claim that you're going twice as fast as you are is pretty ridiculous in the first place.

A bike is an awfully small target for a radar gun to begin with...I don't see how they can clock just the front wheel. There is not a lot of metal for a cop to get a radar reading from in the first place. By the time you were close enough for him to get a good shot at you you should have seen him first.

the laser bounces back to the gun to fast to take the rotation of the tire into consideration

I will answer your question with a question.

What travels faster?
A. the top of the front tire on your bike
B. the helmet on your head
C. your body

The answer is simple they are all connected to the same bike going the same speed. The only chance of getting a different read would be to shoot the body while you lean foreward

Never heard of it, and I don't believe it can work.
