When my husband and I moved to the city, we looked at several apartment complexes. Cost was the biggest factor for us, so we got the local Apartment Finder catalog, from there, we looked at price and then services. The apartment we ultimately chose because they offer upgrade packages, like designer paint schemes, upgraded appliances, and they offered $100 per month discount due to the property undergoing upgrades. The final reason we chose this complex is because it is gated with controlled access. It didn't hurt that we were treated VERY well when we visited.

Location was very important. The price was below that charged by nearby apartment buildings, because the landlords wanted stable tenants who wouldn't move a lot (it's hard to decide to move when you have a great rate). The other apartments in my building have stable people who don't make a lot of noise. Tenants take care of the property, they don't trash the place just because they don't own it. It came with not just one but two parking spaces, which is fabulous! The layout is just large enough for me, but not too large. There's a great view and a balcony, but that's a bonus. One thing they could do to make it better would be to offer a promise that I could stay here for multiple years: I'm on month-to-month. If they would do that, I might buy some new carpeting and fix the place up more: I'd invest my own money if I was sure they wouldn't sell the building. I also hope that someday they will make the building into condos and offer it to the residents: I would pay them to own this place.

I found my place when I looked at the place next door, which was advertised on Craig's List.

I chose this 2 bedroom/2 bathroom place for the following:
Price ($1450...everything else was $1800 - $2200)
Location (1 block from Beverly Hills, walking distance to everything, 10 minute drive to the beach)
Amenities (view, washer and dryer inside unit, fireplace, dishwasher, multiple balconies)
Convenient to work and social activities

My rent is really cheap for this neighborhood. My landlord won't fix anything unless he is required to by law.

First of all cause they were nice looking on the outside, two bedrooms (good sized master bedroom) , it has a balcony, a palapa (grill w/a roof and benches), and a bar. It's quiet most of the time day or night, once in a while you will here the kids playing outside. (I visited in odd hours like 8am and 9pm).It's close to my work and my husbands, plus it's very close to the groceries and eateries. It was a good price for the size and place $595 monthly, water included. Plus now I think it's a good was a good choice. If something breaks, they get it fixed right away, we never have problems.
