I've only known my boss for a short time and the present was items from his wife's home business. I don't feel comfortable buying him a present this year, I hardly know him, perhaps next year I will. I can't help but wonder if I should buy him a small present just to make a good impression or should I say thank you and let it go.

I plan to get the people working for me small gifts because of the help they provide me. I'm hoping none of them feels they have to reciprocate. Your boss may feel the same way.

Times have changed and it is best if you do not get your boss anything other than a card.
Bosses will buy employees gifts (usually expense them and not our of their own pockets)
It is an appreciation gesture to you as an employee for what you've done during the year.
If you get your boss something-it could be misconstrued as sucking up. I suggest a card or nothing. Just be gracious and thankful towards them when you do receive the gift.

I prefer not to respond the same way .if that present means liking your job then try to continue being a good worker and that can be the return to his present and i think that is what he cares for

I don't think you should get your Boss a gift just because
he got you one. A nice thank you card maybe.

A card is completely appropriate and all that is necessary.
