First off - how good of a friend? Sometimes a gift is just that - a thank you card would be the appropriate response.
BUT, this time of year - hard to tell if they were looking to get something in return.
Don't go into debt over this!!! Use the following guidelines:
*Basic friendship (just know but would never do anything together): simple thank you card, box of candy, $10 or less from Wal-mart gift section.
*Level two friend (may do something some day) - definately get a gift or gift card
*Level three friend (almost best friend) - take them out, gift equal to what the value of what they gave, make something.
*Best Bud - OK, now fess up "I didn't get you anything 'cause I didn't think you were getting me anything" - actually, that sounds selfish. Take them out and do something fun together.
*Spouse - Should have got something to begin with! (not applicable to this situation)
DON'T GO IN DEBT OVER THIS!

Its all up to you if you feel bad for not getting your friend anything then you might want to get your friend something, don't lose sleep over it and do it. This is hard, it a situation no one wants to be put in. it like a when i entered a gift exchange and ended up getting something for a much less value than you gave. Like getting cubic Z. for diamonds. Well if it were me I would get something, remember it 's the thought that counts!

you still have a couple of days. I'd go get something for them, maybe a scarf or some gloves or something little. Or take them out for lunch.

Give them candy, or make some cookies, everybody loves home made food- as long as it doen't taste gross!
Plus, if you make cookies 1. you can give alot out. 2. their cheap, but thoughtful. 3. who doen't like cookies?
Good luck!
