How about C.S. Lewis: the Narnia series:
1. The Magicians Nephew
2. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. The Horse and His Boy
4. Prince Caspian
5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6. The Silver Chair
7. The Last Battle
I taught "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" last year in the 5th grade and all the kids loved it.

I'd recommend the recently published "Justin Thyme". It isn't a magical fantasy ... it's somewhere between fantasy and science fiction - sort of science fantasy. It includes: the Loch Ness Monster, a teenage billionaire, a mysterious Scottish Laird, a celebrity cryptozoologist, a computer-literate gorilla, a Shakespearean gardener, a gigantic bald woman, and an eight-legged cat!
The story is great, (my two kids totally loved it), but reading it to them, I was fascinated by its theories about the nature of time, and trails of hidden cryptic clues embedded into the text. Even the identity of the author is concealed somewhere in the book. And although I'm far older than the target audience, I find myself continually being drawn back to it, hoping to discover just one more clue!
It fits both the "Boys' Adventure" or "Fantasy" genres - and is ideal for a confident reader, as it uses a challenging vocabulary coupled with a sort of mini-dictionary at the back defining any compicated words.

Try the Captain Underpants series. Most boys up to age 12 enjoy them. They are half comic book, half chapter book and filled with funny stories about a made up superhero .

There's a new medieval fantasy series in hardcover that you might like. The title of the first episode is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If your nephew is a fan of Conan, LOTR or Wheel books, this is one he'll enjoy. A Hollywood producer said it was, "Like Braveheart meets Lord of the Rings." (See other comments & reviews below.)
Publishers Weekly said in a rare STARRED Review:
"A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages."
Library Journal said:
"This series opener...is a good choice for fans of epic-style sagas and Scottish history."
Harriet Klausner, Amazon's #1 Ranked Reviewer said:
"This terrific medieval fantasy...will elate readers for its fast-paced, action-thrilled story line starring a strong cast."
Nancy McCulloch, PRWEB Article:
"Two thumbs up for a colorful cast of characters, nonstop, rapid-fire action and compelling storyline!"
Fantasybookspot.com Review:
"Taking place in Medieval Scotland, this tale of magic, adventure and love really captured my attention..."

I wrote a book for ages 8 and up: The Caretaker of Tree Palace. I'll autograph it for him if you get it from my web site. It has a 12-year-old male protagonist.
Other great books for fantasy/adventure lovers: Ender's Game and all the books in that series by Orson Scott Card. Awesome! I highly recommend it.

Time Quartet by Madeleine L' Engle. I suggest "A Wrinkle in Time"
CS Lewis' "The Magician's Nephew" or "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe."
Or just give him a really complicated encyclopedia. My brother loved it.

It's got to be Visitors. Bob Chapman's book is a good read. But don't start reading it before your nephew or he'll never get it

Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books - great adventure, but maybe he's already read those.
Dan Sciezka's Time Warp Trio books - very funny, my very, very favorite books when I was younger! (but they're definitely for boys)
The Shakespeare Stealer - that's one a bit more serious, but still really good adventure.
