Don't laugh when you read this. This is a little known tech trick that works 50% of the time. As you've indicated, your gonna loose everything anyway, so no harm in giving this a try. If your drive is not spinning ("makes a whirring noise") the disk may be jammed.
OPTION 1
Step 1a. Unplug power and cable (USB or whatever) from drive.
b.Lift drive 3 to 6 inches from table and drop.
c. Reconnect cable and power and start up.
If this works IMMEDIATELY restore everything from the drive to an alternate drive.
OPTION 2.
If unsuccessful, replace 1b with Place in freezer for 10 minutes, then proceed as above.

If you've still got all the manuals and things that came with it, check to see whether the manufacturer has a service center for just such emergencies (or look them up via a search engine such as Yahoo or Google), as fixing it is liable to be beyond what most computer stores are capable of.

The only other likely solution is using a company such as "OnTrack Data Recovery" http://www.ontrack.co.uk

once you disconnect the force (or the different USB products for that count), do you customarily use the button on the bottom of the exhibit to "adequately eliminate Hardware" ? i believe the force's boot area is broken. I had a buddy who damaged the firmware or bootable sector on the gadget by technique of merely pulling it out of the USB slot on each and every occasion he develop into carried out. in the destiny, i'm no longer particular if it develop into nevertheless writing to the force at the same time as he grabbed it out, yet after that aspect the USB keychain does no longer artwork in any USB port on any pc. someone made a tenet in yet another posting: attempt plugging it in to a USB a million.0 port and observe if it nevertheless works there. in certain circumstances the USB 2.0 ports received't examine it, in spite of the undeniable fact that the USB a million.0 may nevertheless be able to salvage some thing off that force.
