So if I was buying a set of strings, what would i be looking for?
I'm a complete musical numpty!
Some people are musical minded, some people are great artists, with me it's numbers and formulae, a good skill to have but it doesn't really help you unwind after a hard day.
I'm just after a string set that I can start to strum some tunes with, without costing me more than an amateur should spend!
Thanks you nice people!

It depends what type of guitar you have, a nylon(classical/Spanish)or steel strung.

NEVER put steel strings on a classical guitar they wiil bend the neck and pull the bridge off.
I wouldn,t recommend the other way round simply because it will sound ****.

Classical/spanish guitars are more versatile, nylon strings hurt less and don't make ones fingers smell so much.

As far as makes are concerned I always use D'addario for both my classical and steel strung.

You would probably be best with normal tension nylons.

Steel strings can be more of a minefield I would ask for light gauge if you're a fingerstyle player, medium if you only play chords.

If you are playing an acoustic guitar and doing alot of strumming, try the GHS BOOMERS 10's.
Guitar strings are numbered, anything lighter (9,8)are generally used for electrics, all though Stevie Ray Vaughn used a heavy string on his electric because of his hard strumming and bending leads to get the sound he is so famous for.Anything lighter on an acoustic and you will be breaking and buying strings all the time.

I'm not sure where you shop but guitar strings are pretty inexpensive. Get good quality ones. Mediums for acoustic are good. If it has steel strings now, you'll have to use steel again. Nylon strings won't mount on to your guitar.
Try D'Darrio's or Fender.

I have been using D'Addario lately. You would be best served with a light gauge set, probably starting at .009.You'll pay less than ten bucks, which is about average.Get steel(or bronze) strings,it's probably what came on your guitar originally.

Try getting some GHS mediums; they won't tear up your fingers as much as the others, and they're only about $9 a pack; nowhere near as expensive as some.

Elixir is my personal favorite. A bit pricey, but they last forever. Martin makes very good strings too.
