Politicians never grow up
They see it as a big game of Risk, if they lose they will always have millions of dollars to live off of, and they don't care who they screw in the process
The trick is to find the ones that screw everything in favor of the american people

I think most, perhaps all, start out as idealists who want to make change and do well. I think that changes many times as power corrupts many, though not all of them.
I think Don Nickles, a former Senator from OK (R) and David Boren, a former Governor and Senator (D) also from that state are two who were still ethical after serving in those offices.
Nickles went back to the family business, I believe, in Ponca City and David Boren is President of OU.
Howard Baker, former senator of TN comes to mind as well, Alan Simpson of Utah there are more, but I am afraid these are the few and not the many. Certainly Joe Lieberman.
It's hard to put a %age on it, but I think logevity makes it worse, usually. 35%. that is a mere shot in the dark. Local politicians probably are much better than this though. Perhaps a decent majority of them.
As the addage goes
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!

The ones who do care are stuck with the ones who don't. Republicans generally want to change things for the best, but they have their fair share of bozos too. Over all Democrats have trashed our country and sided with our enemies, even back in the cold war. Don't trust anyone who says they will give you money for your vote. Here's a good example of what I mean. Iran, Syria and Korea all said they hoped the Democrats would win the last election.. In the 90s China gave illegal donations to the Democrats for their elections. Why would they pick the Dems over the Repubs? Those countries are not our friends, but they like the Dems. It's because the Dems are socialist and they are weak on foreign policy. Those countries can defeat the Dems politically and they know it.

For new members of Congress, it's probably about 40%. For long term members (10+ years), it's probably 5%. Many Republicans and Democrats are better until they get fully sucked into the Washington machine.
This is why we need term limits for Congress. We have it for the President & many governors, but none for Congress? Many have become like the Lords of old England. America needs greater representation from ordinary Americans. That would also involve a higher turnover of politicans.

Politicians enter that realm as a 'profession'. It has nothing to do with being 'benevolent' or wishing to 'help' others.
Politics is a CAREER. It's about EARNING a living, and a very good living off the backs of the 'rest of us' at that. It's got nothing to do with GOOD people wanting to 'serve' the general public.
It's about MAKING GOOD MONEY. Elected members get an excellent salary, and expenses the rest of us would die for. And don't think LOCAL councillors aren't VERY well imbursed for their efforts, because they are.
Universities the world over cover the political agenda as a 'Top career Move',
and the ' Machiavellian Principle' is their 'BIBLE'. (look up Machiavellian in the dictionary ).
Politics in the modern age is all about 'syphoning' as much money as possible from the population to make us totally 'subservient' to our great masters.
Watch the lives of minor, or fringe politicians who get kicked out of office. Suddenly they're nobody. Which is WHY so many will not SERIOUSLY vote against their masters.

It would be easy to say that deep down in side that a majority of politicians are motivated by self interest.
The balance to this selfishness is the fact that politicians are elected officials by the populous.
Though they are self interested to be a successful politician they must make sure to cater to their constituents.
What a balance...

5% Democrats care
8% Republicans care.
And Yes, I'm a Republican, and not happy with many of them. I think we should have term limits for every political office. Career politicians are killing all of us. You cannot represent the average person, unless you ARE an average person.

Well that's why in theory the public needs to be harder on the politicians only voting for them if they act in our interests which will hopefully be the right ones. Protests and demonstrations are effective ways to convey discontent to others.
