Hi, can anyone tell me the best approach to take in asking for a wage rise? We havent in my job, got a structure in place but the department that I am part of, does. They are paying for my degree and this may seem greedy, but for the job I do as well as being there for 2 yrs, I feel I earned the rise. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This worked for me.
I started with a list of any rises in the past, and came up with an average.
I compared this with inflation, and proved that in real terms my wage was less than it used to be.
I then listed all the extra work I had done, and how much I had improved working practices thereby saving the firm money.
I took this to my line manager.

Basically, list all that you have done beyond the call of duty, put it in money terms if you can, and prove that you are worth more than they are paying.

Good luck

This is a great question because we all go through it in our lives.
1st make sure you are going above and beyond what is asked of you. You have to make sure you can say a few things that you do that is not in your structured job discription.
Typically if the comapny is doing well you get a 3% raise every year.... Now you say they are paying for your degree....I would suggest you add the cost of scool plus your sallery and see how that looks....We always think we are worth more than we make...
I would suggest finish your schooling and get the degree and then go out on some other job interviews to see what other companies would pay you for the same position...
good luck and god bless

The best way i can tell you to get a rise....... get your job description, note down what you do extra that is not in it. Ask your manager if you could have a meeting, explain that you have looked over your job spec and are doing more than what is expected, which of course you do not mind doing, but think he/you need to discuss the possibility of re negotiating your pay.

in exactly the same position!

getting paid 11k a year to do a job that others are getting paid 14k to do... grr..

Try talking to your supervisor in an approachable non threatening way, perhaps this would help!

I can tell you what NOT to do. Don't barge into your boss's office and demand a rise. I got slapped with a nasty sexual harrassment lawsuit.

Try something more subtle, a change in cologne maybe?
