This has got to be one of the most popular questions on YA!

Ok... here it is...
Black people do not call each other 'n!gger'. SOME say 'n!gga'. There is a bit of a difference. Basically, they have adopted the term 'n!gga' to be more of a term of endearment within the black community. Basically, saying something like "that's my n!gga" is like saying "thats my good friend".
Not all black people say the N word. I don't, and I don't condone anyone else using it.
Now, the difference when white people say it. They pretty much always say "n!gger", and it is never meant to be anything endearing. It is ALWAYS meant to be the racial slur that they intend it to be when they say it.
Like I said, I don't think anyone should say it. But, if white people want to say it, by all means... be my guest, but be prepared to endure the consequences, whatever those may be.

The point is- as a group, black people DON'T call themselves that word a lot!! What's shown on TV (especially MTV or hip-hop videos) is not what most people in the real world are like..

Yes, it has become popular among some teenagers and 20ish young adults who weren't alive in the 60's and earlier, so they don't have any conception of just how derogatory and emotionally charged the word was in those days and earlier. Nor do they care, or feel they should- because to them the problems and attitudes of earlier generations are not their own. They feel that the taboos and negativity of other eras does not define them, and should not limit their self-expression.

The problem is the people who DO remember (many of whom lost family members to lynchings or were themselves arrested, beaten, firehosed or attacked by police dogs in civil rights marches & demonstrations) aren't all dead yet- so to them it's a shock. Imagine how Jewish grandparents feel when they see teenagers wearing Nazi symbols as fashion statements. It's kind of like that.

Wow another intelligent question that will get people thinking about positive, uplifting things! It is so obvious that you don't have many black friends or whatever because you would know that not all black people find that word acceptable. Will this type of BS ever end? I DON'T call other black people that and I will get VERY offended if someone of ANY race, including blacks, called me the 'N' word; trust me I am not the only black person that feels this way. Not all black people use that word okay, so people please stop the generalizations, they are not factual. My hope of coming across an intelligent question in this category (cultures & groups) is slowly diminishing.

The word ****** is disrespectful, period. It was used to degrade blacks, so the use of the word by people-white, hispanic, asians, etc.- is showing that no one has evolved over the past 100 years.

As for why other blacks can can other blacks the word, keep up. They don't can themselves *******..they call each other ******..there's a difference and it shouldn't matter..you shouldn't use the word knowing it makes you look like a racist idiot..

Thanks for the 2 points...

Well, as I answered before on a previous question asking the same thing, as a black woman I am personally more offended when black people use it, given that self-degradation is the worse degradation of all. Don't set childish double standards that create racial tension and don't expect respect if you can't even give it to yourselves.

It's a form of "bunker mentality," and has plenty of precedents. Most cause no backlash at all from outsiders. This one does partly on the grounds of racism, and partly because others want to be helpful and see it as self-destructive.
As an historical example, the song "Yankee Doodle" was a derogatory ditty sung by the British in the Revolution and taken up by the Colonials in defiance.

Seriously, I couldn't tell you why anyone would want to saddle anyone else with any sort of slang term. There's way way too much of that going on. People are just people. Some are bad and most are good and that's the part that matters, not the descriptors, but they're just people.

because black people are cool like that.

naww im joking. basically, the last time white people were "allowed" to call black people th "n" word was when they hung them and threw food at them. but when black ppl call each other that there is no hate involved.

u get me?

I'm not offended by the n-word at all, the definition of the n-word is an ignorant person. I don't prefer my race to call me that anyway, but it is very hypocritical to let your own race to insult and get away with it.

It's like a figure of speech to us "black" people, but a lot of us get bent out of shape when other races call us that because back in slave days we were called that by our masters and these days it is a from of direspect to us.
