I think they is a good reason why driving on the right side of the road is preferred (probably to do with the fact that most people are righthanded?) but the main reason why there are two systems is that all the parts of the world that used to be in the British Empire drive on the left, except parts that are joined onto landmasses. Thus, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and lots of islands like I think Jamaica drive on the left, whereas countries like India drive on the right, because it would confuse things at borders. I think Britain chose the left side pretty much arbitrarily, and things have just stuck that way ever since.

Actually different countries have different 'sides' that they prefer. For example in Singapore they have the driver's seat on the right side and drive on the left side.

I guess its just how the culture is of that country (children learn to prefer a side when they are very young).

That is my guess.

Well if you have a manual transmission, you have a problem. Either the shifter is on the left--o.k. if you're left handed-- but not for right handers.

Or the manual shifter is on the right side of the wheel, which puts it next to the door; kind of uncomfortable either way.

Also, when the passenger gets out, he is exposed to the oncoming traffic. The American system is better.

well here in the US we drive on the left side of the car and on the right side of the road. in other parts, like England, it's backwards. i don't know why but that just the way it is.

Because God said so and it is good to do what God says. God does not like England or Australia (Or even St. Thomas)...You should do what God says all the time or one day, you will find it raining frogs outside... Frogs are icky and slimy...
