You may just need to clean it up.
Cleaning up your Disk
Every now and then, and you can not do it to often, I run a disk cleanup and disk defrag. I run mine at least once every week. Both can be found by following the same path.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Follow the same path and click on Disk Defrag.
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
This last one will help as well.

I wish I could help you. But, it could be a lot of things. Yes, it could be a virus. Your machine may be running a lot of unnecessary processes. Your drive could be full, you really need about 10% free as a minimum for the operating system to use. First, check how much free space you have and then the processes running. Also, run a full scan using a reputable anti-virus program.

Do as rlh242424 recommends as your first step. Most of the time it is a cluttered computer causing the problem.
If you have DSL and leave your computer and/or DSL modem/router on for long periods of time the modem/router could be causing part of your problem. After you do what 24 suggests then turn of your computer, monitor, printer etc. and modem (in that order). Wait a couple and then turn them on in reverse order.

it may be a new one called Ebola virus. you may end up trashing that computer system. it even spreads to your printer. only a first-rate computer repair expert can help you and unless you have a good friend who is qualified, you will probably pay more that old funky junker that you are hanging onto. shell out some dough and got to some place like tiger direct and get a real dual core screamer. get the insurance, too.
