I am asthmatic, and basically most (if not all) asthmatics are mouth breathers.
We breath IN through the mouth as well as OUT.
A train of thought (Buteyko), says that this method of breathing bring in too much oxygen, and lets out the carbon dioxide too quickly as well.
The same train of thought says that asthma (tightening/narrowing of the airwaves) is your body trying to cut down on too much oxygen coming in, and trying to retain more CO2.
In a nut shell, overbreathing is very bad for you long term, and alters your body chemistry.
So I would agree with the advice that you were given initially.

In through the nose, out through the mouth is what I have always heard. Also, you are supposed to inhale on exertion and exhale on relaxation.

You breath in through the nose and out the mouth in yoga.. and when you are trying to relax.
if you are doing cardio, or weights breath through the mouth.
When doing weights -You are should inhale pushing up and exhale going down

it depends what exercise you are doing.....but usually you breathin through the nose and breath out through the mouth. this way, when you breath out all the H2O is eliminated from your body. you have to breath out on the moment you are forcing in your exercise, it helps the move.
