The answer is no, but get a fireguard to stop any sparks getting on your carpet.

LOL, when I first read the question I thought yo said "is it more dangerous to burn wood than coal on my face?"
LOL

Anyhow... burning wood produces more flames, which can go into the flue and cause a chimney fire, however burning the charcoal you get in the grocery store would produce more toxic fumes.

Either way if you are going to burn anything in your fireplace you should get your chimney cleaned at regular intervals to prevent a possible flare-up.

Burning wood can cause a greater risk of chimney fires but worse still it can spit bits out onto your carpet so you need a fire guard. Wood will also soot up the chimney quicker. Be safe!

Yes, wood fires give off a resin that can build up in the chimney and cause chimney fires. They have special logs that supposedly helps to prevent that by burning once a year, or you can have your chimney cleaned every year or two and not have to worry about this problem.

I think wood produces a tar resin that can build up and ignite in a conventional chimney. You should have the chimney lined if you intend to burn logs frequently. Small brick stacks are not suitable for log fires.

you'll get more soot off wood than a 'clean' coal. just keep the chimney swept once a year and you'll be OK
