Take control of a defensive end or linebacker (linebacker can't be covering anyone) before the ball is snapped. Whichever way portis goes, follow him with your player. You'll either get between the ball & portis or tackle portis for little gain. Also you could pick a defense that slides a LB or DE that way automatically (you'll see a line from the player w/ a circle on the end of it). My son used to throw to the tight end constantly (every play). I tried doubling the te, whatever I could think of. Finally I took the defensive end over the tight end & bumped him, then followed him down the field. I've lost 3-4 madden games in my career, I'm not bragging, but I know how to win @ madden.

Either run like a cover 2 that way you'll have the flats as well as the middle covered...possibly run a 5 or 6 DB defense and cover portis man to man with a CB (he'll burn a LB)

Don't have a man spying, he'll stay with the QB...the only prob with the cover 2 is that if portis gets behind the zone into the seam it could be a big gain

also just have your hands team on for the onside kicks, take control of someone and just go at the ball...not much else to tell you on that

a team with a strong secondary is helpful, but it's more helpful to score than it is to stop him from scoring. First, make him pay by always choosing onside kick...even when he doesn't. If he onsides, pick a front guy and try to run at his guy, because the object is to get computer on computer, which means you will win 7 out of 10. If he doesn't onside, run right-middle until his guys come, then dash towards the right. Get a good passing team, and only use plays where you have the option of 6 receivers (3 RW, 1 TE, 2backs). Circle Pass is a favorite. No matter how well he covers you, there should always be an open spot. As for defense, figure out which side he likes to pass to. 9 year olds aren't quite there where they know enough to vary sides. Whatever side he usually picks, make sure it's overloaded. If he varies, then pick a Quarter play where there are people guarding the wide recievers at the line, as well as in the secondary. Do not pick prevent defense as he'll start doing short passes. I would pick from the front line (DE's), as Linebackers and Secondaries take a lot of practice to get good at, and if you are using strong pass portection, it's best to rush him as much as possible. A rushed throw will get you more than anything else, as he's probably picking plays that need a little time to develop.

I bet he plays it all the time too right? If you could practice on it once in a while that'd definitely help. Try a 4-3 defense with a linebacker as a spy. That will cut down on those Portis receptions. For the onside kicks, when it comes time to select, be sure to have your on-side team ready to receive it when he kicks it so you're ready for it. Try to audible if you have to because it's a lot easier for your grandson to recover if you dont have your onsides team out on the field.

If he rolls the quarterback out of the pocket, pick dime formation with CB blitz and the other players in zone defense. If he stays in the pocket, pick 4-3 zone blitz and standard dime zone that targets the area he likes to pass to. Also find plays he can't deal well with. If he blitzes, play screens, run a lot and have out passes to the tight ends and running backs.
