Saint Nicolas used to ask parents how their kids were for the whole year and in the spirit of the wise men would give gifts accordingly, if they were bad, he would leave coal in their stockings and if they were good he would leave a toy. I'm assuming that after he died it just continued and escalated into getting everybody gifts. I'm not complaining though, I love Christmas... I think that it's a time of celebration and the gifts are a wonderful perk.

Do you know the old saying "It's the thought that counts"
The gift or the price you pay for a gift is not the important
thing...It's the sharing, the love and the hugs you give.
Those are your true gifts..........Being blessed to be able to
share with your friends and family. Giving of yourself, is
always very special. The true Christmas spirit is not the
commercialism you see a lot of people getting sucked into.
God has blessed us with the gift of salvation....We can
bless each other with the gift of our love and prayers.

its a very good question that you have asked, yea, thats right, in my point of view, i think that its where the wise men came to visit baby jesus on the night where baby Jesus was in bethlehem. By acknowledging Him as the Son of God, they presented myrrh, gold and fran(forgotten the spelling)...

apart from this, i also think that its due to the fact that God gave His one and only Son Jesus to earth the save the sinners, and this is one part of an important that happened where it was obvious God also gave us something that leads to salvation...

from all these events, people started giving presents i guess....it symbolizes God giving His son to us... merry Christmas!
