I am a card carrying member. I support them, because they support our consitution. they may fight battles that i don't necesarrily agree with once in a while, but for the most part, even though i may disagree with the issue, the priciple is still the same:
the constitution protects everyone, not just some people of a particular race, or particular religion, or people who are doing things you don't agree with, and when someone thinks they are above the Supreme Law of the Land, and violates those rights, it is in everyone's best interest that the ACLU defend the people who's rights are being abridged, whether we agree with what they are doing, or not.

captainobvious_lj there is a big difference between iminent domain, and police depriving citzens of their property and belongings without due process.

Why did the ACLU defend NAMBLA?
In representing NAMBLA, the ACLU does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children. What we do advocate is robust freedom of speech. This lawsuit strikes at the heart of freedom of speech. The defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. The ACLU can sometimes take cases that are a bit extreme, but I remember in particular one thing that made me support them. In my high school, a girl there was wiccan, and wore a pentacle necklace to school one day. She was sent home for the day because it was deemed "inappropriate attire" and told if she wore it again, she would be suspended.

Keep in mind, this necklace was the size of a dime - about the size of many crosses worn by Christian students. Also, this was a completely public school, not a private religious one, where the "inappropriate attire" thing might actually fly.

She did wear it again, under her shirt, and someone saw it and told on her when she changed for gym. Her parents called the ACLU, who overnighted at their expense the information, including court cases that had been won over such things, etc., and helped them to get the suspension off her records and get her back in school. They also offered to represent her if it ever became necessary to do so.

I thought that that was really great of them.

If I could wish one organization out of existence...

Here's why:

NAMBLA

Illegal Immigrant rights (support thereof) - what part of 'illegal' do they not understand?

Coercion of municipalities into removal of things such as the Ten Commandments, even when a vast majority of the people want it and it was a donated item just because it's on public land; trying to force the City of San Diego into removal of a cross that has stood for more than 100 years; suing in Louisiana to have a Katrina memorial cross that is on PRIVATE land removed just because it's "near" public land (real sensitivity being shown there)... etc...

I think at one point the ACLU was doing good, now they are just pushing their agenda too far.

In Nevada the city govt took homeless boxes off private property and the ACLU went after them for confiscating their belongings even though they were on private property without permission and were asked to leave many times. yet the state of New Hampshire invokes eminent domain for a upper class republican area and their houses are ceased and not even a my condolences card is sent to them. I will find the link. there are many more. but this is one off the top of my head.

I agree they are good at finding loop holes but sometimes common sense doesnt play a role. the case of the protestors at the military funeral was another one. granted they werent on the private property but for the police to ask them to respect the mourners was common sense.

my biggest problem with them is that they use the loop hole of a violation of civil rights provides them the right to use public tax money to defend them. they are profiting using tax money

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out; because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the Unionists, and I did not speak out; because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out; because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me." quote from Pastor Martin Niemoller.

The ALCU fights for peoples rights. We don't always agree with the view point of those for whom we fight, but if we don't speak out for them; who will speak out for us?
