First of all, what the other people have said is wrong... It isn't compatible due to the fact that it was released on both the XBOX and the 360... Games that are released on both can only be played on their respective systems.. To put it bluntly, if its put out on both systems, for example Marvel Ultimate Alliance. You can't play the XBOX version on the 360 because there is a 360 version... The only games that are compatible from the original xbox are the ones that weren't ported (had versions made for 360 as well..) I only have the base model, no hard drive and I can play most games, you don't need the hard drive. It is a waste of money unless you only plan on playing online. I guess its just a way for Microsoft to ensure that people buy the 360 games.........

To play Xbox games on your Xbox 360, you must have an HDD installed. This provides software emulation necessary to play the Xbox games on the Xbox 360 console. Even with the HDD, certain games are *not* compatible. The game you mentioned, Madden 2007 is not listed on the backward compatibility list and therefore is not compatible with the Xbox 360. In the future, you may reference the source below to determine which Xbox games will operate on the Xbox 360.
EDIT: The answerer below brings up the important point that you do *not* have to have the HDD to play backward compatible games. He is correct, however you cannot save games unless you do have the HDD. Backward compatible games will not work with the Xbox 360 memory cards.
