Perhaps it depends on the subject, the age of the lecturer and the university.... However, I can honestly say that I never met any lecturer who behaved as you describe, either at graduate or postgraduate level. Mind you, I studied subjects (first technology, later management) where lecturers normally had experience of industry and commerce prior to appointment and were therefore older. Or maybe I was simply lucky! Just don't let their behaviour affect your studies. Once you get your degree you can forget your bad experiences at university.

Some of the professors who hold doctorates are, and have been, so immersed in their research that they have less developed people skills. As such, they may also be less able to discuss a point without it appearing as an argument because they believe they have the answers based on their research and the fact that the other party is only a student who doesn't have all the facts. Others are absolutely fantastic in their people skills and a real pleasure to study under. If you're at a top flight university, you will run into both kind.

For a very basic and general answer the ones with doctorates have usually only ever worked in or around a university and have only experienced that lifestyle. The ones who have come into lecturing from the private sector have more real life experience and have had to interact with a wider range of society.

well i am in my final year at university, and so i've been taught by some good lecturers, but at the same time there have been ones that weren't so good. for example, during the first year, there was this lecturer who to be honest wasn't very effective at getting her ideas and points across to other students. she had a very soft voice that it was difficult for us to understand what she was trying to say and do.
i guess it was why a lot of the students didn't engage in the lectures that much because of it. a year later and i never saw the sight of her again and since then, i had heard from the rest of the students in my group that she was sacked and alas, a lot of them- not just the students from my media class but from other media modules which she teached on were happy to see the back of her. the excellent lecturers at my university tend to be the ones who are able to motivate the students and gain their attention. from what i've expereinced so far, it has been very good, despite the odd hitches and complaints regarding the standard of teaching

I believe that the real problem is that the university system places no stress on pedagogy and everything is centred on research and publishing. Ninety-nine out of every hundred university professors have no training in pedagogy and frankly no interest in it either. When I was doing my PhD a number of students I knew got very good jobs right out of school because they had already published a number of papers in good journals. They had never sat in front of a class of students and had no real interest in teaching. But that is the system and until it changes the university will stay the same.

Like anywhere else, universities have a wide range of different types of people.
Som lecturers are great at their jobs and great to be with, some are very good at their subject but have poor people skills, and some are just arseholes.
I don't think this problem is restricted to universities.

well, the reality of it is: they get paid to teach you in whichever way they think is better(sorry) and not to be nice to us. I know exactly what you mean. I had about 2 of those, but make the best of it adn always stay ahead of them. When you get any assignments from the lectrures tryi to think like tem, ask as many questions as you can . I've found that some of them kind of wear out their attitude when they have curious georges on their rooms. and Most of these professors nowadays are understimating us because they think we are no match to them, so prove them wrong. lol
