The windows firewall only monitors inbound connections. I don't feel that is good enough. A awesome firewall is one from Comodo. Works great right out of the box.

Don't listen to those saying the Windows Firewall is not any good. It is very good. Most that claim it is bad have no proof and can state no facts proving their claim. The repeat what they hear others say.
I recommend you go to this site and read the entire site. You will learn much about all forms of malware and how to protect against them with AV and AS programs. You will get to the Firewall section and learn about using them. It is well worth the time spent reading this site.

This Bleeping Computer site has a great Tutorial section.

Windows firewall is a bit weak, and only protects you from incoming threats, and some do get past it. A lot depends on what you want a firewall to do. I switched to Comodo, because it protects my computer's outgoing signals as well as incoming and I have wireless.
Comodo is free for life, so it you are interested, here's the website:

As long as you have a good anti-virus you will be fine !!!
I suggest you get AVG it's free and has been voted number 1 in most magazines for 2/3 years running, winning even over anti-viruses which you buy !!
Windows firewall blocks all the ports which you need to block, it even stealths port (Hides them)... People who say windows firewall isn't good enough either have something to gain or are just don't know what they are talking about !!

i wouldn't use the windows xp firewall, it is annoying and apparently very simple to crack. I use zone alarm which is very good. AVG for my antivirus and i very rarely have any problems and they are both free. I'd also recommend downloading a spyware/adware removval program such as spybot (damn windows needs a doctor to take care of it) and run it every month. Hope this helps!

Windows firewall isn't very good, so I would recommend you download Zone Alarm >>> http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown
and then switch the Windows firewall off.
If you require other security programs, go here for some excellent ones:

under no circumstances had a difficulty right here, yet having reported that i do not use workplace in any respect as i exploit Open workplace that's far more beneficial. i do not use OutLook both and that i exploit Thunderbird which back is a lot more beneficial. I under no circumstances use MSRT device as AVG does a significantly better pastime then some thing MS tries. SP3 works fantastic right here and that i have have not had any complications. having reported that i'm not your widely used person as I have hardened XP in a large number of diverse procedures.
