ok Dec. 7 i started my Depo shots, Dec. 13 i had unprotected sex( i know im very fertile being that my period just went off) but i want to know how long does it take for the shots to actually work? I ask because yesterday(Dec. 19) i bled a little it was like a blood clot and the doctor said i would have those on the shot, but would it be during my period or any time is what i dont know. So if you could clarify any part for me that would be helpful. before going to a doctor to see if im pregnant already.which i dont think so. Thanks so much.

Depo is affective immediately after your first injection so you are protected. The blood clots are normal at any time as is breakthrough bleeding, light spotting, heavy bleeding, or no period at all. Some women bleed for 3 months straight and some never see a period. Also, after stopping Depo when you want to become pregnant be aware that it can take years for your fertility to return after Depo.

First of all, the depo shot is effective right after its injected, and second of all your most fertile time is about 10 days after your period. So i wouldnt worry about being pregnant. I have been on the depo shot for a little over a year now and havent had a period at all in 3 months. Right after i got on it my cycle was like this.....
Month 1 right after shot, i would have no period,
month 2 i would have a very light period, and
month 3 i would have a normal period then i would go back for the shot and it would start over again. So the shot messes with your period big time. I think im going to go off of it after this cycle because i have heard so many bad things about it. so if i were you i would do some research.

The depo shot should be in effect by six days past the injection date. But, like most contraceptives, it isn't 100% effective. If you experience symptoms of pregnancy (sore nipples, fatigue, bloating), make an appointment.

And don't have unprotected sex if you're not married. The depo does not protect against STDs.

Some women continue to have very light periods while on the depo. Some don't have a period at all. Good luck.

You're probably not pregnant. You shouldn't be very fertile right after your period, it's usually right before your period is the most fertile time. Off cycle spotting can occur when you first go on the Depo shot. Don't worry about that. I wouldn't think you're pregnant, but pick up a $3 test at Walmart just to be sure

With the depo shot you can get breakthrough bleeding. From what I remember of the shot it is efective right away. Don't worry about being pregnant. Just wait till when you should have gotten your period and get a cheap test to check and see. Be prepared though that after going off the shot to get pregnant it could take a while (at least a year or more) I had been on the depo shot and it stopped my ovulating...took me 18 months of trying before I found out. Had to take clomid to get pregnant

When I started taking Depo my doctor to me that it takes a month for the shot to take affect and not to have unprotected sex before then if I wanted to make sure that I didn't get pregnant.

Anormal cycle puts a woman fertile 14 days after her period started. Depo affects everyone different, I had no period at all when I had it but my girlfriend was bleeding for 2 mos straight when she got it. Another friend of mine had spotting for 2 mos. I would call the doctor and see if there is a nurse you can talk with .

You may have some spotting for a while, I did, you're body is just adjusting to the shot.
