If you want to play on the official servers, you'll have to pay monthly, but there are several free ones out there, and some even include their own clients. I've linked you to Clownphobia's free Ragnarok Online server, but you could probably do a Google search for others.

I'd also suggest looking through FreeMMORPGList.com. There are a lot of different games listed there, from RPG to FPS. Unfortunately, the list isn't cleaned out as often as it should be, and some games listed have long-since shut down.

I really like Ultima Online, you should try it if you have not. You can cast spells, ride horses, summon demands, kill dragons and get gold, color your hair, make armor, dye your armor, make furniture, buy houses and decorate them. If you like casting spells Ultima Online is great! It's like medival type game. My bf has been playing for 7yrs and still has not done everything there is to do in that game!
