Best resources to find a used Porsche? Probably the Pelican Parts BBS (www.pelicanparts.com - go to the 911 Boards and there is one for cars for sale), or watch the 944 email list at Rennlist. Also, most regions of the PCA have websites with classified ads, and these are worth checking. PCA's magainze Panorama also has quite a few marketplace listings and I beleive this may be available on-line as well (though you may need to be a PCA member to access this).

Craigslists and eBay would be worth checking as well, though most vehicles there are probably also listed on one of the above.

The real question is what you are expecting for the price, and wherever you look you may not be finding a 944 that is in good, and readily usable condition in that price range. I'd also express a concern that if budget is a major factor, the 944 may not be the best car to persue. They are great cars to drive, and are quite inexpensive at current market values - however, keep in mind that these were fairly expensive cars when they were new, and that parts and upkeep costs relect that.

The only time you should by a 944 for that price is if you plan on using it for a parts car or have time for a MAJOR project. If you’re looking for something in that price range to drive, I’d suggest a 924 S or 914. Both are going up in value if taken care of, and they are not that hard to fix if you have time. I wouldn’t buy either for a daily driver.
The 924 S is actually faster than the 944, as it has the exact same drive train yet weighs significantly less. A 914 in that price range will also need a lot of work, but is easier to work on than a 944. (watch out for the battery tray if you look at 914, they are notorious for rusting through)

All you'll get for $2000 is junk. A basically clean, no-problems, early 944 would cost you at least $6,500.

These cars are VERY (read that again) VERY expensive to fix and so you don't ever ever ever want to buy one that "needs stuff".

Buy the best 944 you can afford and give it to Hans and Dieter twice a year (Spring and Fall) and spend $400-$500 each time for them to maintain it.
