First do an HPI check, however still be careful as the car could be a ringer( Cloned from a real registered car)
It is always best to ask for the registration document BE VERY CAREFUL if the seller is not the person on that document.
For damage and mechanical inspection get an RAC check.

take some pictures from every angel of the car (what do you mean by stolen, you kids are taking it at night) if so record your mileage every now then.
