My daughter is almost 4 months old and I am trying to give her medicine that the doctor gave me for her ear infection. Everytime I try and give it to her she spits it all up and I'm concerned that she's not getting any of her medicine! I have tried several different ways, I'll put it in her mouth and close her jaws but she won't swallow. I have also tried putting it all the way back by her throat and she still won't swallow. She also congested really bad due to a cold and I'm trying to give her that medicine from the doctor too! It all ends up on the front of her shirt! What should I do?! I do not give her any other food besides breast milk and formula so putting it in baby food is not an option, and I can't figure out what to do.....

ok I know the little ones can be tricky. First not many kids like the medicine. First I would try a medicine syringe, place the syringe on the side of her mouth and all the way back to where her molars would be, Just squirt a little bit in, I mean a little bit. Hold her chin or forehead and blow on her mouth and nose. most babies will swallow, Repeat the process until all the medicine is done.
Please do not put it in formula, breastmilk water or juice. Never put anything they don't like into something like. that will ruin what they like. plus what if they don't finish their food.. If there is someone else there have them try what I wrote,b/c she just may take it from them.
Remain calm I know it is fustrating
If all else fails call the doctor and see what else they can do Good luck

I am going through the exact same thing right now...my daughter is four months old. I tried several times with the dropper and failed miserably; got it pretty much everywhere but in her mouth. Or she's spit it out regardless of what angle I had her or whether I squeezed her cheeks or jaw. Regardless I knew she wasn't getting the medicine she needed.
Anyway I read the information sheet that came with the prescription and it said it could be mixed with milk or formula, so I just put it in her bottle. I just make sure I do it when I know she is good and hungry so she gets it all.
Try elevating her crib mattress slightly on one end (make sure that whatever you use to elevate it is UNDER the mattress). Use a humidifier in her room. I also have been using the small plug-in vaporizer/night light (I think its made by PediaCare) - it's awesome (and not medicated so OK for babies over 3 mos). I also would bathe her in Johnson & Johnson vapor bath before bed.
Good luck and hope she gets to feeling better!!!

If it's a liquid medicine put the dose in her bottle when you feed her. Just be sure she drinks the entire bottle.

I can't imagine a doctor giving a baby a tablet to take (although I have met some pretty dumb docs). If for some reason it is a pill just dissolve it in a bit of the water you use to make the formula and give her the bottle like normal.

It could be she doesn't like the taste. If it's a prescription, see if you can take it back to the pharmacist and get a different flavor put in. Lots of pharmacies now offer a variety of flavors for children's medicine.

If that doesn't work or isn't an option, try mixing the medicine in her milk or formula. Pour it into the bottle, add milk (enough to mask the taste, but not so much that she won't finish the drink), shake it till it's dissolved. See if she'll take it that way. It was the only way I could get my first to take his medicine till he was almost 3. I hope it works for yours. Good luck--

Well I was going to suggest using a medicine dropper and squirting the meds in the back of her mouth, but sounds like you tried that already. If nothing works, you need to call the doctor, she may have to get the antibiotics in shot form. Good luck and I hope your baby is better soon.

My daughter did the same thing (actually, she would vomit it right up) when she was a baby. We use to have to give her antibiotics by injection (1-2 injections at doctors office), and tylenol in suppository form (they sell it at drug stores- I think it is called Fever-All). For congestion we would bathe her with Johnson and Johnson "blue bottle" wash (I think it might be Eucaliptus- I don't remember the name) and put a humidifier in her room. Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Maybe try her formula? Maybe try giving her a tiny bit at a time every minute or so, alternating with a bottle... let her tummy get used to it. Try not to worry too much about her not getting her medicine... is you don't think she's getting better, go back to your doctor. Kids are tough... they can often fight these things with time.

put the medicine in 2 or 3 oz of pear juice

Mix it with about an oz or two of water and give it in a bottle. I do the same. That way if they spit up a few tablespoons it is already diluted so it isn't all of it.

what are you trying to dispense it with? I use a medicine dropper, not the one that comes with the medicine, but a store bought one and she sucks it right out of it. You cant put it in her bottle?
