The easiest way it to follow what the provided manual states. Most routers come with a quick install CD that has software that will walk you through the steps of setting it up.
Or:
1. Plug in the router and connect the cable coming from your router into the port marked WAN on the backside of the router.
2. Connect a cable from the network card on your computer to one of the ports marked LAN on the router.
3. Power on the router.
4. Once you have established a connection to the router, open up a browser window. (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)
5. In the address bar, enter this: 192.168.0.1
6. Enter the username and password. (Default is usually 'admin' for both. Also try without a password)
7. Navigate to the setup page.
8. If you have a PPPoE connection, enter the appropriate info. Adjust any additional settings that you need to.
9. If you have a wireless router, navigate to the wireless section and enter the appropriate info. Remember to enable some form of encryption/security if you plan on using wireless.
10. Restart the router
11. Connect to the internet.
12. Profit.

2 basic steps
step 1: plug power into router
step 2: plug wan into wan port on router
after that there's nothing to it. when you first try to get on you will have to go through a short wizard but just choose all of the defaults and go through it. also the first time you try to get on you may need a hard wire connection to the router so connect your system to the routher with an ethernet cable. any open port will do

All of these other answers are forgetting one thing: security! You SHOULD NOT JUST USE ALL DEFAULTS ON THE ROUTER. Usually, these defaults are set to weaker security, and an eager hacker could own your connection in just under an hour! Change security from WEP to WPA, change SSID name, turn off broadcast, make sure you have firewall installed and ready to go.

1) get into rouer w/ network cable
2) connect "internet" port on router to broadband modem
3) set router up as dhcp server
4) set ssid of your choosing for your network
5) set pc's or laptops up as dhcp clients
6) set same ssid as above on wireless connections for pc's
That's it... good luck
