I own a Transmission Shop, and from my experience, I would say you need another transmission, or some new parts in the one you have. With the Ford 5 speed they are bad to wear out the forks where they go into the ring (slider) that changes gears. It gets stuck in first, and when you try to shift to the next gear, it doesn't get it all the way out of first, and it just won't go into two gears at one time. I hate to have to be the one to tell you this, and I know it does not make your day here at christmas time, but you could try to find a used one, but they would be about the same. Worn out too! They are hard on them forks, and the bearing in the front shaft. These forks aren't too hard to change, but the kicker is; you have to take the transmission all the way apart, and if you do this without any instructions you will never get it back together correctly. You can use a camera to take photos as you go on each step and number them. This way you know how it goes back. The transmission has to be stood on its end when you put it back together, and the syncronizers are a nightmare if you get them apart. It takes some know how, and not many shops can even do one of them due to how complicated the assembly procedure is. You will be hard pressed to find a shop that will do it for you, and if you do, it will cost you a lot due to how long it takes to do one. A new one or a remanufactured one would be the best way to go, but be prepared to fork over some big money for one, unless you can get lucky and find one with low miles in a junkyard. They are hard to find. This I'm sure of, as I have had one sit in my shop for months while they looked to find one. I really am sorry, but they are everything I say they are, and then some.
Glad I could Help you. Good Luck!!!

Is it a Ford or Mazda transmission? Ford just doesn't make a good 5 speed.
You could try changing tranny oil but make sure you use a good synthetic, normal EP gear oil doesn't work.
I heard rumors of bad throw out bearings but cant confirm this, need replacement around 100,000 miles or less.
