Detectives said on Wednesday that a man wanted for questioning over the murder of a female police officer could have fled the country disguised as a Muslim woman wearing a full veil.

Mustaf Jama, 26, is thought by police to have escaped to his native Somalia at the end of last year after passing through security checks at Heathrow Airport wearing a niqab and using his sister's passport, according to newspaper reports.

Asked whether Mustaf Jama had used a full Muslim veil to evade checks, a spokesman for West Yorkshire police said: "It's a possibility. He could have been wearing a pantomime horse outfit as well. But until we get him, we won't know for sure."

How foolproof is the present 'passport' system?

Are people wearing a niqab/veil just allowed to pass through without any checks?

If this is true, why can, just anybody NOT claim to be a muslim & use this system, just to avoid delay at airports?

'Icarus' has raised a very valid point.
An innocent Islamic couple, were not allowed to board a plane due to this kind of 'thoughtless' attitude of those with the duty to protect all.

If Muslim women are allowed to pass through security without removing their veils then passport control is a joke and whoever heads it should be sacked, personally speaking if I was boarding a plane and Muslims were in the queue wearing the full regalia and not made to remove their veils then I would refuse to get on the plane, you can't have one rule for Muslims and another for everyone else.
If he did take off the veil then whoever let him through should be sacked or charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive as he is one ugly looking man.
What surprises me is that the muggers and bank robbers are not dressing up as Muslim women but maybe that is yet to come, what do we do then?.

The answer is no -- people wearing a veil are not allowed to pass through without any checks. But the police do not have a face recognition system that allows them to tell when someone is pretending to be someone else, or when a given wanted person is in front of them.

You could just as easily dress as a nun and use a sister's i.d. to pass through security -- the veil isn't the big issue here.

Also -- notice that the story appears to be pure speculation.

Wierd innit?
When i was a kid my dad brought back a traditional arab head dress from serving in the first gulf war.
I was wearing it and took it off as we came up to customs to catch a ferry and was held, searched etc and threatened with being detained under the prevention of terrorism act.
Even though i wasn't wearing it...
Even though my face wasn't covered....

So how come this bloke gets away with fully covered up through an airport?

People make mistakes and I think they are looking for people in horse costumes when they should be diving under those berka veils.

Whoa, I mean surely a person in a horse costume would not be a terrorist, would they? would they! would they.
