It's very easy to do it yourself. You can buy strings off ebay for a few pounds (or dollars) and you can use this website to hear how each of the strings should sound.

If you take a guitar into a music shop and ask them to re-string and tune it for you, it'll be dinner time before they stop laughing. It's real easy and a set of guitar strings will cost you no more than about 6 quid. Buy yourself a tuner or some pitch pipes and take note of how the strings that are on it already are wound and fixed, then remove them and fit the new ones. E A D G B E.

Well, strings cost about $15 dollars. You can either tune it yourself or find someplace to do it for about $5 or so. The most important thing about playing the guitar is knowing how to to tune it. Now would be a great opportunity for you to learn how to tune your guitar. Stringing the guitar is easy. They go in order from smallest to biggest, with the biggest on top. You'll know which is the top depending on which hand you are going to strum with. As far as tuning it goes, get yourself a nice tuner. If the tuner shows that the string is sharp, you need to loosen the tension on the string, and the opposite if the note is flat.

I think Guitar Center charges a standard $10-$20 to string and tune. It's not that hard to do it your self, though. When I started playing guitar, I was primarily a keyboard player. I tuned the strings by ear with reference to the piano. Most axe players that I know use a digital tuner. Try stringing yourself, though. It's not that hard to do. The tone of strings from top to bottom are: E, A, D, G, B and E.

It cost me about $20-25 to get my guitar re-strung and tuned.
I had to get the strings reversed because I'm left-handed.

about £15 for a decent set of strings. Most music shops would do it for you fairly cheap, but you should learn to tune it yourself, because by the time you get it home it will need re-tuned again ( strings settle and the tuning knocks out). And over time the tune will knock out of it anyway. You can buy a wee electric pitch checker for about £20.

a shop will charge you about 25 pound to tune and by the time you get home its all up the Creek
