Ran across this article and thought it presented a very interesting, valid question.

"In a hearing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York on Wednesday, a panel of judges pressed the government on why certain words should be considered indecent in an awards show broadcast, but not in other circumstances such as news programs."

I think the FCC purports to look at things like channel (broadcast v. cable), intended audience (I would assume awards shows would be general and the news has as few restrictions as possible), time it comes on, etc. You would think that governmental regulation of news would be more difficult and would have to pass a higher level of scrutiny. Here are the FCC obscenity regs:

Hope that helps!

Like anything to do with media it is target audiences. Time and place for everything. Live shows like BBMA and the Grammies along with The Superbowl attract a much different audience then the Oscars or Kennedy Center Awards. It is a way to keep people in check and things in good taste. As for the news, our news (Canada) is not censored as much as the American mainstream news. It is not uncommon for us to see raw unedited features on our 11pm news.
