Well there are a lot of reasons for this. It could be because the website doesn't exist. It could be because your Internet connection was broken and it could be because you typed in the address wrong.

Are you typing it into the address bar of your web browser (web browser being Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) If so, that is for website addresses. You would type an email address in the TO: field of the email client, or a web-based email server such as hotmail or yahoo.
