I graduated last year with an acccounting BBA and recently have considered going for my MBA but not sure whether I should go for the accounting MBA or just the general MBA. It seems like there would be more opportunity with the accounting MBA. Currently I work at a tax software company and like it, so have thought maybe getting the accounting would be better so I could eventually do taxes. But I also like the thought of being part of the management team if I were to obtain the MBA. Just hoping for opinions on whether the getting the general MBA would be more or less beneficial than the accounting one. Also, do you know what the salaries are like for both? Any thoughts?

Do you like accounting? If so, go for that. Most MBA's find it boring.

Any MBA program you pursue will give you a sampling of classes, in areas such as economics, finance, accounting, management, and/or marketing.

But the real question is whether you intend to move into a management position within the accounting profession. If so, then I would stick with a focus on accounting.

However, with ANY M.B.A. under your belt, you'll still be able to move into management so long as you've got enough experience.

The public accounting industry is hot. They need people, avg starting salary 46k-53k. If you take the MBA accounting which would make you eligible to take the CPA. So you would have a CPA and MBA. But public accounting may not be what you want to do but that experience is useful to many aspects in the business world.

Finishing mine up in 2007 with a finance concentration. From my understanding, your degree would state MBA and it's UP TO YOU to list on your resume what concentrations (if any) should you choose to. Really, your job experience will pigeonhole you to a degree. In other words, if you get your MBA and continue to focus on accounting, you're more likely to be viewed as a "one trick pony."

No idea on "general" vs. "acctg" MBA but the salaries I've seen for MBA's are in the $100K-$120K range with investment banking concentrations averaging $140K.

I'm not sure what school you're considering but any school worth its salt will have a career center for MBA's which would be able to give you far more detailed information on salaries, job opportunities, etc.

It's not an "easy" degree, especially for people like me going nights/weekends while working FT, but it's worth it. Good luck! :)

You have to decide whether you want to be an accountant or a general and then, there's your answer.
