I would think it meant it wasn't an actual book. Maybe it was a transcript or a proof copy of a book in progress.

note contained in the "___" is basically as "called"...or "called as". Signifying this particular note would or not be referring to some thing that's of a few thing diverse not by way of the indisputable fact that is.

I think that it means that whatever they were reading was loosely defined as a book. Maybe it was really a magazine of journal.
