Oh yes...he was once a Red Cross ambulance driver.
But basically his "contributions" were of a literary nature.

By writing novels, articles and short stories, he entertained, enlightened and stimulated people's minds, which is a good thing in itself. By striving for excellence, he challenged other people to do better, which is a great thing. He set a good example for others in many ways.
