Yes! Not only that, but you're just adding more water to freeze on the car and be chipped off. Just start it up and run the engine and defroster until it's melted enough to remove easily. You shouldn't be driving off on a cold engine like that anyway.

Haven't done this myself, but I've read several times that you can use vinegar as a preventative:
"By using a mixture of three parts vinegar and one part water you will have what it takes for a frost and ice-free windshield. Place the mixture of three parts vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle. After parking your car for the night spray your windshield with the vinegar mixture. With this mixture you will wake to a frost free and ice-free windshield."

As a 30 year veteran of living in rural Illinois (I am wiser now and live in AZ!), I can tell you with absoulte certainty, YES, hot water can crack your windshield when it is poured on the layer of ice built up on it.

My old trick was, start the car and leave defrosters on. Go back in house and continue to get ready. By the time I was ready, so was my car.

Warm and toasty, with a windshield as clear as it was the last time I drove the car. (That's not saying too much due to the omnipresence of road salt!)

Yeah, not a good idea. The windshields can crack! just turn on the car and put the heat on, I also heard it is better to pour COLD water on it because the water itself just melts the Ice and the hot water will crack the glass.

I would be more concerned with the 0.5 inch layer of ice that would build up after you poured it. I tried that once but on my drive way. I didn't feel like shoveling snow so I poured boiling water all over. It melted the snow away but then it turned to very hard ice...

It is called Thermal Shock... and yes it can break the glass. An ice scraper is safe or just start your car ahead of time with the defroster on so that it can defrost with engine heat.

Yes use a de-icer,or cover your windsheild with plastic, I use a garbage bag cut to fit, stop the wipers half way, put them over the plastic to stop the wind blowing off the plastic.

NO

That will just cost you extra money.

Wake up earlier so you can start your car and have your defrost on high.

Then you should be able to scape the rest off.
