What we see when we look in the mirror is not always what we see when we look at ourselves without a mirror. For example, we can see our own eyes and nose, and with two mirrors we can even see the back of our head.
When you look at yourself very closely and stare into your own eyes, you can sometimes see things and people you never knew existed in yourself. Some people exist within other people, and although they may not be the dominant personality they nevertheless can take control occassionally if given the opportunity.
When you look into your own eyes, you will eventually see these other people. I have an inner strength which I never knew existed, and a lot of that comes from the people I did not know I was. I am not just one person. I am an amalgamation of many people, and even some animals.
What makes me unique, is the mixture, the concoction which is me. My eyes are the secret peephole into my soul!

The first reflective objects were lakes, ponds and puddles. Early people were fascinated with their reflections. Then as metal was discovered and it was able to be polished to see reflections also, you could now carry your reflection with you. Reflections were believed to represent the owner, the good, the bad, and dare I say, the ugly.
When glassmaking began, the backs of glass panels were coated with silver to make them reflective, giving us our first modern day mirrors. And you are right, that was a stupid idea.. Because now, you have a reflective surface of yourself that has whatever mystical properties you believed before, except NOW the thing can break - which is why you have 7 years of bad luck.

If they hadn't - just imagine the sights walking our streets!
Also, how would women fill their time if they've not got a mirror to check themselves out in?
