My wife kind of hinted that she wanted a present after our first baby is born. She mentioned wanting a ring with the baby's birthstone in it so one day she can pass it along to the baby when he or she is older. I wanted to give her something else too.

Do you know any other gifts from a husband to give his wife after having a baby?

If you want to go practical then get her 6 months or so of a house cleaning or maid service. If you were thinking more sentimental then jewelery is good as is a poem, a letter. My father gave my mother a wooden rocking chair and now it has been passed down to my sister when she had her first child.

If she was smart enough to tell you that she wanted a birthstone ring, then get one. You may want to add your birthstone and your wife's. How about a necklace with the mother/child pendant on it. Ask any jeweler, they will know what this is.

I am over 50 and I have a 3 carat emerald that my grandmother was nice enough to give my mother when I was born in May. I wear it with pride every day.

You're so sweet for being thoughtful. I'll give you a few ideas of things my husband didn't do when our baby was born and please do the opposite.

He didn't get me flowers (I know you want to get something special -- but as long as you get something you should get points)

He didn't clean the house before I got home.

He didn't help me enough getting out the hospital. He came to get me all stressed out thinking about what HE had to do. He didn't help me down with the baby, because he had the car in front the exit. Note: Have other people help you when taking the baby home. 2 of you will not be enough.

Be extra patient, kind and sweet to her. Extra, extra, extra. But, you probably are since you posted this.

The best gift is to give her some money and tell her to take the day off and go shopping. You will do all the work with the baby and the house. She can pamper herself and maybe hookup with some girlfriends. She would probably like that! Congratulations

For the book comment: Do you think giving birth to you affected your mother's sex life? Ignorance is defined as not kowing or unaware. On this subject, you are ignorant.

I think it is very sweet of you to want to give your wife a present. Labor and birth is indeed one of the most difficult tasks a woman is ever faced with. There truly is no material gift that measures up. I suggest something personal...something to remind her of your eternal love for her, as the delivery of your first child does.

Congratulations on your first born!

I would assume you kind of like your wife maybe even love her. So get her the ring with the baby's birth stone. If you like your wife less then a little get her diapers. If you really love her a lot get her both and maybe a spa treatment after the birth so she wont feel so crummy.

How about a certificate for a mani/pedi or some kind of salon treatment? Massage is good too. She'll need it after labor, delivery and all of the "up all night" hours. It's a good relaxing gift that is just for her.

Take a picture of the baby at the time of the birth or whenever you can take a good one and get it put into a lockett with the baby's name engraved on it so that she could wear it. That would be nice.

I got as a gift a tree and planted it with every child.
We still go to the trees to watch them grow. If you own your own home it is easy this way, but if you do not then ask for a good place to plant it like perhaps a Boys camp or a nursing home..

Well the best gift I can think of would be a day of pampering. Once she is healed up, give her a lady day, facial, massage, manicure, pedicure. Let her feel great about herself while you watch the baby.
