was told that old unit was bad and filled with acid so system had to be flushed and neutralized. New compressor with filter was installed and then it was charged with freon. All this for the low low price of $620. Oh yea, it was still under warranty so all we were paying was for labor. Did we get ripped off?

Seeing that you are talking about a outdoor condensing unit , I don't think you got ripped off. It sounds about right. What tonnage was the unit? I think you meant they replaced the filter drier ( I hope), which is a good thing. Most company's offer a one year Labor warranty for changing out a compressor. I would confirm that though.

There is no way to be sure how long a replacement compressor will last. Alot depends on how clean the refrigeration system is and how well the technician performs the replacement. If the current compressor has had a mechanical failure there is a good chance the system may not be contaminated. If the current compressor has had an electrical failure beware. You might want to get a quote on a system replacement from a local contractor who has a good reputation with your neighbors. Many new systems carry 10 year warranties and you may decide that putting that 1000 bucks towards 10 years of worry free cooling is the way to go. A system replacement will also provide you with reduced utility bills. I don't mean to generalize about anyone but it has been my experience that contractors that do work for home warranty companies tend to be lower quality companies. A top quality hvac contractor will have his phone ringing day and night and will not fool with home warranty companies. You may want to avoid the contractor steered to you by the home warranty company.

You did get ripped off...because your air conditioner should have a freon compressor not an air compressor installed in it.
Otherwise, it doesn't sound too bad. Warranty probably wouldn't cover the costs of the freon along with the labor, so the costs aren't too bad.

Unsure if you got ripped-off, but you paid top dollar. That is normally a 2 1/2-3 hour job. Remember you had a certified and trained HVAC technician do the work. They don't work for minimum wages and their company is entitled to a profit. What kind of warranty did they give you with the new unit?? Hopefully 1 year or better.

They took you all right. I worked on commercial stuff and I could change a compressor in two hours, that is changing it out, pulling a vacuum and recharging it. There we some compressors in hard to get at places that took a little longer. Sometimes it took me a little longer on a regualr house hold refrigerator. It is kind of hard to get into that little hole in the back. If it was a burn out and the system was flushed with R-11 it may have took an extra hour. Turn the company in to the Better Business Bureau.

That is a lot to pay for just labor. Are you sure freon disposal fees weren't included? It could be they had to take special precautions with the acid and disposal. How long did they work on it? Did you use a licensed contractor and check his history? In the future I would get a 2nd estimate.

if the condensing unit is out side and assessable then yes you did get ripped off !this is a 3 hour job max .so you paid over 200.00 dollars per hour .and depending on the unit the warranty should cover labor also .if you don't have a copy of the warranty call the maker of the unit and find out what it covers.

does it work now, did it not work before?. ac systems in cars have many parts that have to work together to function properly. i would say if they fixed the problem with only the compressor and not the evaporator, clutch, hoses and a bunch of other parts, playing hit and miss by replacing everything untill they finally found the real problem. if you ac blows cold sounds like they nailed it. the tools required to service ac systems are very expensive and the procedures require training, so unless you could have done it yourself. or don't care about having ac, what chioce did you really have at least you did not have to buy a 500.00 compressor too.

umm yes. if something is under warranty then unless specifically stated parts and labor should be covered for a predetermined period. also is this a home or vehicle system? if you can add more info for a clearer answer.
