Well, they certainly have a much better chance of winning the World Series than their southside crybaby neighbors, the whinny sux do.
hahaha
(the whinny sux owned the tigers on '06 (winning 13 of 19) and look what happened!!!)(and the whinny sux still couldnt make the playoffs!).

I suppose it's possible that the Cubbies could make a decent run at the playoffs and perhaps the division title in 2007, but winning the World Series? That's an awfully big assumption.
Barry Zito has yet to land with a team and most indications point to him ending up in New York, which only bolsters a rotation that I feel is better than the Cubs.
I think the Cubs have a formidable offense and the team will be better off if they don't end up having to trade Jacque Jones away. Losing out on his 25HR and 20SB will hurt the offense and could force Pie into the lineup before he's ready. DeRosa is going to come back down to earth a little in '07, but should still be solid. Izturis has yet to completely regain his pre-surgery All-Star form, but in this lineup, this could be the year it comes together.
The pitching looks good, but Lilly, a lefty with flyball tendencies in a park that's huge for right-handed hitters...UGH! Marquis has shown signs of brilliance and potential retardation throughout his career so one wonders which Marquis the Cubbies just shelled out $8 mill/year for. Remember this is the same Marquis who has given up on by the two best pitching coaches in baseball (Mazzone & Duncan).
I also don't view Ryan Dempster as a lights out closer. I do think if Kerry Wood is healthy he will be a huge X-Factor coming out of the bullpen. If Mark Prior can bounce back and have a campaign like he did in '03 or most of '05 (he is an odd-year pitcher - like Brett Saberhagen was) then this rotation suddenly looks a lot better.
I'd put them in contention for the division and maybe...MAYBE a shot at winning the NL Pennant, but it's still too early and the Mets have only gotten better this offseason.

Not anytime soon. They lack pitching. After Zambrano, they have nothing.Prior had one good year and has spent too much time on the DL with arm trouble.Wood has spent as much time on the DL as Prior and when he wasn't,I don't remember him winning any Cy Young awards.Ted Lilly? The one game over .500 in his career Ted Lilly?Jason Marquis?Tony LaRussa left him off the post season roster for a reason.Rich Hill?Inconsistent at best.Go ahead, name the bullpen stars. This pitching staff is going to break the hearts of Cub fans everywhere.
Alfonso Soriano is a good player, but he strikes out too much and doesn't walk enough.Derrick Lee has had a knack for being injured lately, too.Aramis Ramirez doesn't hit in the clutch. The Cubs don't play situational ball very well;walking, stealing bases, hit and run, etc.Lou Pinella is thought to be a genius, but he also is the same guy who bombed in Tampa Bay.
The Cubs will win when the ownership hires baseball people with a record of winning and gets out of the way.

Allright Georgie, don't go there. The WHite Sox are going to own the kittens this year.
The Cubs won't win, they are the cubs. No pitching, sure they signed Ted Lilly to a huge contract, but did anybody else notice one strange thing about it. He's Ted Lilly, he sucks, well he doesn't suck, but he's not worth that kind of money. CUbs won't even make the playoffs.

If they make the playoffs, which on paper the have a good chance of doing, anything could happen. In a best of 5 game series with Zambrano and a good healthy Prior and improved lineup you have to like their odds.
Pitching well in the post season is key.

They got a shot, the only problem is that its the cubs your talking about. There is going to be atleast 2+ players on the team that are the most important that get a long term injury. My guess is Soriano.

Ask the Yankees how well that works. Problem is the Cubs are still the Cubs... heartbreakers. That'll never change.
