The winter solstice is December 21. It is the shortest day of the year. It starts getting dark around 5:00pm. Very short day. After it the days start getting longer. The Summer Solstice is the exact opposite. It is the longest day of the year, and it's June 21. Starts getting dark around 10:00pm. After it the days start getting shorter. Then there's the Spring Equinox and the Autumn Equinox which are both days of the year with equal night and day. How is that for an answer :-)?

In the northern hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year and the longest night. For the Southern hemisphere opposite is true. The earth goes in cycles.

I believe it makes it shorter and appear darker sooner. But I might be wrong.
