Smoke is belching from the back of my 1996 Artra Van (diesel), the exhaust has holes in it , cos I can hear it, but whats causing the black smoke?

If its black smoke its not the rings Check filters and injectors

chance full filter or drain it for water new air filter if not.. if your engine use oil aim sure its your piston rings the 1,6-1.7 diesel are a modified petrol engine so be easy on it..don't torture it and chance oil and filters every 5000 km

Quite possibly worn injectors. Try some injector cleaner

My guess would be piston rings (not too bad to do) or valve stem oil seals. A complete ***** to do.

try an oil change it will only cost you 20 pound that should sort it out
