If their advise seem to always make matters worse, they are either stupid OR deliberately guiding you down the wrong path.

No one knows the right path for you. Only you can make decisions for your life. So, it isn't whether or not your friend is someone who would show you the right path or mislead you but You need to get to know yourself and trust yourself to be aware of what is going on and where you want to go in life and be responsible for your journey on your own. A friend or anyone will tell you what they would do if they were you but only you can be the ultimate friend you need.

You have to know right from wrong. If you have morals and live by principles, you can spot a phony a mile away.
Ask yourself the questions, is this right or wrong? It is very simple...
If you feel uncomfortable with a situation then leave.
If you feel like red flags are going up all over you
around this person, then get far away from them.
If someone likes to live dangerously or with drugs and booze in the mix of things, then stay away from them.
You could be caught and end up an accessory and then where would your life be.
Be honest with yourself and don't just go along for the ride, see what is going on around you and don't be afraid to speak up for your safety and get out of the situation.

Your instincts will lead you the right way, all the time. You must learn to trust them.
There are very clever selfish, mean people who will purposly mislead you. It is your decision to follow them and you know if you are being charmed or not.
Think about it.
