It is a sign of respect to God. Women are culturally expected to keep their heads covered, as is traditional in many places. When they marry it is under a canopy, a covering. Men as husbands, meanwhile, provide family "covering", ancient Romans and many Greeks used to have similar requirements, all women were under the "covering" of a responsible male. When Jews are excercising their religion, they cover their heads, as being under the covering of God. It is a sort of badge or flag where they are symbolically saying they are under His authority. To themselves, it is a reminder that I need to act, especially when wearing this covering, as God would have me act.

It is forbidden for a man to wear an earring 1) It is considered "beged isha" (woman's clothing) and men are not allowed to wear women's clothing and vice versa 2) Piercings are forbidden for the same reason as tattoos and scarification- they were the ways of the idol worshippers and are forbidden mi'd'oraiso (in the Torah) As such, the wearing of an earring is not a minor issue, but completely forbidden and should be avoide- anyone mistakenly thinking that it is a minor issue, and wears one while wearing a kippah, is mistaken.
