The most reliable tests that would give you that information are a chronic villius sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis. Both, however, are invasive tests conducted to test for genetic defects, are risky (each carries a risk of miscarriage), and are not performed for the purpose of checking whether it's a boy or a girl. That said, if you are having either test performed, you can ask to find out the sex of the baby as well. An ultrasound can also provide that information as early as 12 weeks, although most women don't find out that way until about 20 weeks: for one thing, doctors may not want to "tell" so early because the risk of error is greater then (especially if the particular ultrasound equipment isn't the greatest) and also because most women may not have any ultraounds at all until their big "Level II" ultrasound (also called an "anatomy scan') which is performed around 20 weeks. Ultrasound is a very reliable way to determine sex, but it is not foolproof by any means; the baby has to be "cooperative" and be positioned so that the technician/doctor can see the genitalia, plus the equipment and the technician/doctor have to be up for the job. In other words: if the doctor says "it's a girl" it probably is, but you will always hear stories about someone knowing someone else whose doctor was wrong. (Also, there's a greater chance of the doctors saying "it's a girl" and it being a boy, than vice versa, for pretty obvious reasons!)

As for all the other methods....including whether you're carrying high/low, over the middle or out over the sides, the baby's heartrate, the straightness/crookedness of the linea negra...etc etc etc....it's all bullsh...I mean, it's all old wives tales. Of course they're accurate sometimes -- if you stop a stranger on the street and ask "am I having a boy or a girl," they have a 50 percent chance of being right. But that's no more an accurate testing method than any of the other strange things you read about.

Good luck!

sorry but none of the "tricks or myths" are real or work, the chinese calendars are bogus, the needle on a string gig a joke, it doesnt matter where you are carrying the baby high or low.....it depends on the woman and her body. I tried all of these....they all said boy,,,and im having a girl!!
There is a blood test you can do as early as 9 weeks but its VERY expensive and insurance wont even touch it...other wise its your 20 week ultra sound and then hope that baby doesnt have its legs crossed!

oh yeah the most sure way, give birth.
amnio is pretty accurate to, but they don't usualy do those unless hi risk for certain birth defects.
ultrasound i don't trust after no less than 12 they all said i was having a boy, she is most definately not a boy.

I am from the Caribbean and how we detect a woman being pregnant and wants to know if its a boy or a girl is by watching the shape of the abdomen.
If your abdomen(belly) is round its a girl and if the navel is pointed its a boy. This is a very old saying from my great great great grandmom and granddad days...........

when I was preggers, one of my friends asked if I had a dark line going up and down my belly. (known as the life line - i don't know the technical name of it although most women get it around 7 months.) and she asked me if it went from my groin, straight to my belly button and then straight from my belly button, up to the top of my belly and I looked and told her that it wasn't perfectly straight, it was a line going straight from my groin to my belly button, then a little over to the right the line continued but it wasn't perfectly straight, it was crooked. She told me that a straight line means you are having a boy, a crooked line means you are having a girl. Mine was definitely crooked. My little girl just turned 2 months on Friday. My friend knows a Dr. that SWEARS by this method and has not been wrong yet!

In the early stages, it is difficult... but after about six months, a baby girl will tend to make you expand on the sides, whereas a baby boy you tend to carry more in front of you. This is quite accurate.

my midwife told me that I was having a boy with my second pregnancy because the heart rate is usually lower with boys. Girls tend to be in the 150's.
