I never liked apple. So I'd vote dell.
Watch your specs carefully though. If you're a gamer, DO NOT get one with a radeon EXPRESS graphics card! It shares the memory and is not good for processor-heavy programs, including games! Check the stickers/spec lists, it will say X300 (or whatever the model number is). It will have the X at the begining. If no X, it's not the express and good to go. I just checked, and Dell does offer ones with or without the intergrated memory on the graphics card. Make sure it is not. I know it's a little more expensive, but you dont want slow loadtimes or freezes while you're trying to play a game, and that right there would make it worth the extra cost.
Something else you may want to watch. The processor. I'm not a fan of Intel. I have had Athlon, now with 3 different computers, and I love it. Our first Intel (I think it was a pentium III) was too slow and crashed many times. The athlon 64 is probably the best on the market for now and will do perfectly for games. Duron seems to be crap too. My mom had one, and it crashed and was slow alot. I don't know about centrion though. We made sure our last laptop was an athlon 64.
Is your school setup for apple? I know most schools are. (I always hated that, since I couldn't swap things from home, to school...) If it is, you may want to stick with an apple. I can't really help you there though, since I haven't used one in umpteen years. lol
Good luck with your purchase, and have a great Christmas, and an even better New Years!!!
;o)

Well I have experience in using both computers. My parents own a dell desktop and I own an apple iBook. My iBook runs a lot faster than the dell and the dell has had to be restarted from scratch 3 times and everything was lost on it because it recieved a virus which is one thing that apples do not get. The one problem with the apple laptop I find is that it can not do as much as the dell with gaming. There are many games that you can only download for a PC and not a Mac computer. Also I am not able to go on some sites and view videos like www.launch.com I can view videos on youtube.com though. But, in the end I would buy a Mac again instead of a PC they do have software now that will make your Mac into a windows and I have found my Mac gives me so much less problems and it never freezes on me. I also like so of the things that come with the Mac that are not on a PC such as the widgets you are able to download which are little games and things you can play (they are so cool). I like the music software they make for Macs and the new Mac's come with a camera on the top of them which allows you to take pictures of yourself or whoever is sitting at the computer with you and you can change them to look like the picture was drawn or out of a comic book and you can change the color. For music purposes I would also say that the Mac is better for downloading music.

I would recommend you to buy a dell because it is compatible with other software programs. But, if you are into graphic designs and music, buy an apple.

Both are really good but if it was me, I would get a hp only because I've had my laptop for going on 4 years now and i have yet to have serious trouble with it. It has a lot of memory and I've downloaded about 800 songs without any trouble. Good luck.

The new Macs have the ability to run both Windows and OS X. My son-in-law has one and loves it.
True it costs a little more but well worth it.
His major reason for buying was; a PC can only handle 4 gigs of RAM but Macs do not have an upper limit. He's an animator.

I myself prefer Toshiba but of your choices I would go with Apple. Yes some may say you are limited to an extent going with Apple but a lot of Windows software is becoming more compatible with it. May be a little higher priced but the quality is better in my opinion.

Dells are great computers, and you should not have any compatibility issues with your school.
Apples are great too, but you really need to know your way around a computer. You will run into quite a few compatibility issues.
Where ever you go, use a coupon.
