8 Gigabytes is equal to 8,192 Megabytes is equal to 8,388,608 Kilobytes is equal to 8,589,934,592 bytes. A byte is comprised of 8 binary bits. This allows for 256 different combinations per byte. These 256 combinations are the standard ASCII characters. Characters like Arabic and Hebrew letters are Unicode and require two bytes per character.

Only hard drive manufacturers round down to 8 billion bytes for 8Gb. This is why your 200Gb hard drive only shows up as 186Gb (minus the space taken up by formatting on top of that.)

8 gigabytes (it's a measure of memory).

About 2,000 songs if you're referring to an IPOD or similar player.

Read on for more info.

gigabyte (derived from the SI prefix giga-) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to one billion (that is, a thousand million) bytes.

Gigabytes in use

[edit] Facts
As of 2006, most consumer hard drives are defined by their gigabyte-range capacities. The true capacity is usually some number above or below the class designation. Although most hard disk manufacturers' definition of GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes (however, computer memory has a natural inclination towards units that are powers of 2), most computer operating systems use the 1,073,741,824 byte definition. This distinction can be a cause of confusion, especially for people from a non-technical background, as a hard disk with a capacity of 40,000,000,000 bytes would have a reported capacity of only 37.4 GB.

[edit] Gigabytes in different products
A DVD-5 format disc is capable of storing 4.7 gigabytes, or roughly 4.38 gibibytes. A DVD-9 is capable of storing 8.5 gigabytes, or roughly 7.92 gibibytes.
One gigabyte is roughly equal to 18 hours of MP3 music (at 128 kbit/s).
One gigabyte is roughly equivalent to 11 hours, 40 minutes of Flash video (at 450x370).
Most 6th generation game consoles have game discs that are around 1 GB or more: Dreamcast (1.1 GB), GameCube (1.5 GB), Playstation 2 (8.5 GB), and Xbox (8.5 GB)
The human genome contains 0.791175 GB of data (the 3.1647×109 base pairs[4] represented as 2-bits).

8Gb is a measure of data. 8GB means 8 Giga Bytes. I'm guessing you are talking about the iPod Nano you just asked about ;)

In this respect, it refers to the size of the Nano's internal memory. A system that stores anything electronically will always have a limit. In this case, it is the amount of built in memory (8GB). An MP3 is just a big collection of computer data (1s and 0s) and this data takes up space. So in sort, the more Gb you have, the more MP3s you can hold on it

8gb means Eight Gigabytes of data. Here's all you need to know about sizes:
the basic: 1 byte (b)
1,000 bytes = 1 kilobyte (kb)
1,000 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1,000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
1,000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte (TB)

A floppy disk holds 1.44MB, a CD holds 700MB, a normal DVD holds 4.7GB, and then of course Hard Drives for computers normally hold anywhere from 40GB to 1TB.

It means 8 gigabytes. Which, whatever your talking about (ipod or other storage device)has a storage capacity of 8 gigabytes. For and ipod this would mean you would be able to hold about 2,000 songs.

In basic and easy terms, 8GB means about 8000megabytes, which refers to electronic memory. Most likely your talking about the new ipod nano, the 8GB version will hold about 2000 songs as songs average about 4/5mb each.

Gigabyte. It's really not that hard to figure out, you just have to get used to it.

8 gigabytes. it is a measure of electronic memory storage. roughly equal to 8 billion characters of information storage...it's a pretty decent amount.

Eight gigabytes, or 8,000,000,000 bytes (of eight bits each). These days, a typical capacity for a small portable disk drive.
